Gezocht: een versierde initiaal “M” te leen

I am an American art history student currently studying in Amsterdam for four months. As well as my studies, I’m working on a letterpress printing project under the guidance of Joos Wiersinga and Alex Barbaix in Amsterdam.

I’m looking for a single decorative initial “M” to use for the first page of my text. Ideally, I’d love to find a block that closely matches the styles of the images I’ve attached here, but anything even slightly similar would be great.

If you happen to have something suitable and would be willing to lend it to me, I would be incredibly grateful. I would return it within a few weeks, and pay postage both ways of course.

Bij voorbaat dank!

    • That would definitely work, although I’m assuming it would cost something to produce? I also would need to figure out how to elevate it in the press to regular type height.

  1. It would be helpful if you could provide a number of details relative to this request for a decorative capital ‘M’ for your printing project.

Exactly how large (or small) must this decorative capital letter be (X * Y dimensions) ?

What are the allowable minimum and maximum heights of said block ?

How many prints are you expecting to make with said block? Which is another way of asking if the block material must stand up to quite a few impressions or if it will only be used for one or two?

Does it matter what material this block is made from? Brass, zinc, wood, or even a cliché made from rubber, linoleum or some other material?

On what sort of press will the final project be printed? Proof press, clamshell press, etc?

What is your project deadline and when exactly must this block be in your hands?

    • Hello,

Regarding size, something around 5-7 cicero in height and width would be ideal, but something a bit smaller or larger would work.

Height-wise it would ideally be the Dutch standard (24.85mm), but if it were smaller I could always put something underneath. I would prefer not to have to do that, though.

I am intending to only make one impression, with a few proofs, so the block need not stand up to much; material is not important.

The press is relatively small, handpowered flatbed over which the paper (wrapped around a cylinder) is carefully rolled; the pressure is just enough to get a good transfer of ink and no more.

I would like the block by this coming Monday, if possible, or soon after that.

      Thank you very much,
      ~Lincoln
